YOUR GUIDE
Massimo is an expert and passionate connoisseur of dye plants, a craftsman who has dedicated his life to rediscovering natural colors, particularly those derived from woad, the plant that produces blue.
His experience spans across: textiles, fashion, leather goods, wood paints, thermoplastic materials, and cosmetics.
He has also played a role in historical and agricultural research, collecting documents and launching projects to promote dye plants for the creation of cultural and productive districts that revive these ancient techniques.
His journey in the world of dye plants began through meeting two local historians who contributed to the revival of woad in Italy. Since then, Massimo has experimented and perfected ancient dyeing techniques.
PROGRAM
For those who want to explore, it begins with an unprecedented guided walk to discover the city of Ancona as a renowned Emporium of the Adriatic, a Maritime Republic with extraordinary autonomy, a crossroads of peoples, techniques, and artistic motifs.
You will learn how important the production of purple was for the Doric city in ancient times, follow its milestones, and, amidst anecdotes, you will move through the old town’s trade routes.
A journey into the history of the city and the surrounding region, following the thread of the production and exchange of these natural colors.
IN THE DYE SHOP
You will meet Massimo, the dyeing master, in his dye shop, and here you will be immediately surrounded by his botanical collection.
Massimo will involve you in the story of natural colors in Ancona, starting from the Roman era!
We will explore the production of purple, witnessed by archaeological digs in the city, and see how this shop has revived the technique of extracting purple dye from Murex shellfish.
We will talk about dye plants and their uses, and immerse ourselves in the history of woad and the blue color, which has symbolized power, wealth, and allure. Woad and indigo, the two plants that fueled the fashion for blue between the 13th and 20th centuries, have traversed centuries of trade and exchanges.
Ancona was one of the main centers of this trade. In the Middle Ages, the port city became the link between East and West, with woad from Montefeltro being exported to the rest of Europe, and indigo coming from the Far East by sea. In an era when Venice sought to monopolize the trade of this precious color, Ancona stood out as a strategic alternative, becoming a crossroads of exchange and culture.
SPACE FOR ART!
The story will give way to creativity! You will dye a piece of Marchigiana hemp fabric in woad blue in the Tintúra vat, using the “shibori” technique, an art form from the East. You will personalize a placemat, expressing your own creativity. Using artistic bindings, folds, wooden boards, and strings, you will create your own placemat to dip for a few minutes in the dye bath. When you pull it out, you will witness the magic of the color setting on the fabric, reacting with the air, and finally, you can admire your work of art!
A delightful memory of a city rich in purple and woad blue.
